Taxi or Arlanda Express: which option is right for you?

Door to door, not station to station

The headline numbers compare different journeys. The train measures airport to Centralen; a taxi measures airport to your doorway. Twenty minutes on the train plus a platform walk, a metro change and a final walk often lands within ten minutes of a 40-minute drive that ends at the entrance.

So the useful question is not which is faster, but how much of the journey each option leaves you to finish yourself.

Cost, and how the maths flips

Train tickets are priced per person, a car per vehicle. One traveller pays far less on the train; a family of four or a group of business colleagues divides a single fare and often pays less in the car. Somewhere around three passengers the two become comparable — the exact point depends on the fares in force when you travel, which is why we do not publish a comparison table that would be out of date within months.

One difference is structural rather than numerical: an Arlanda Express ticket has a published price, and a pre-booked transfer has a price agreed in writing. Neither leaves you guessing. An unbooked car at the rank is the only option here without price certainty, because Swedish taxi fares are set by each operator rather than regulated.

Luggage, children and prams

The train has luggage racks and step-free access from the platform, which is fine for cabin bags and manageable for one large case. Two large cases per person, a pram, and a child who needs carrying make the transfers at either end the hard part.

In a car, luggage is handled once. Swedish law requires an appropriate child restraint for younger children; on a pre-booked transfer the seats are fitted before the car sets off if you give the ages in advance. On the train, no child seat is required or relevant — but you will need one for whatever ride follows Centralen.

Where you are actually staying

This decides more cases than anything else. Hotels around Vasagatan, Klarabergsgatan and Norrmalm are minutes from Centralen on foot, and the train is the obvious choice. Blasieholmen, Södermalm, Östermalm and Djurgården all need a further leg, and anything in Solna, Kista, Sundbyberg, Nacka, Uppsala or Sigtuna is off the express line entirely.

If your destination needs one more connection after Centralen, the train has done part of the journey and the taxi has done all of it.

Early, late and irregular hours

The Arlanda Express runs frequently through the day and into the evening, with reduced service late at night. Very early departures and small-hours arrivals are where a booked car changes the trip most, because it runs to your schedule rather than a timetable.

Pre-booked cars also track the flight number, so a delayed arrival moves the pickup. A train ticket for a fixed departure has to be reissued or forfeited.

Accessibility

Arlanda Express platforms and trains are step-free, and staff assistance can be arranged with the operator in advance, so the train itself is accessible. The difficulty is the same as with luggage: the journey continuing from Centralen.

A car is generally simpler for a passenger with limited mobility because there is one transfer instead of three, and the stopping point can be agreed in advance. If a specific vehicle type or ramp access is needed, say so in the request — it depends on availability rather than being guaranteed.

Deciding in one line

One or two people, light luggage, staying near Central Station, travelling during the day: take the Arlanda Express. Three or more travelling together, real luggage, children, limited mobility, an address elsewhere in the region, or an arrival late at night: request a car and agree the price beforehand.
