How to get from Arlanda Airport to Stockholm
The short answer: the Arlanda Express is the fastest way to Central Station at 18–20 minutes, the commuter train and airport coaches are the cheapest, and a pre-booked car is the only option that ends at your door. Which is best depends less on price than on how far your bags have to travel after you get off.

Arlanda Express — fastest to Central Station
Trains leave from stations beneath Terminal 5 and between Terminals 2 and 3, and reach Stockholm Central in 18–20 minutes, several times an hour for most of the day. If Centralen is close to where you are going and you can carry your own bags, nothing beats it.
The part travellers underestimate is what happens after Centralen. A platform walk, a metro change and a final walk to the hotel can absorb the time the train saved, which is why the honest comparison is door to door rather than station to station.
Commuter train (pendeltåg) — cheapest rail option
The regional commuter train uses the same airport station and reaches Stockholm City, next to Centralen, in around 40 minutes for considerably less than the express. A station passage fee applies at Arlanda on top of the ordinary transit ticket.
Departures are less frequent in the evening and overnight, so check the timetable before relying on it for a late arrival.
Airport coaches — good value with luggage
Coaches run to Cityterminalen, attached to Central Station, in roughly 45 minutes with luggage stowed in the hold. They are comfortable and inexpensive, and a reasonable choice with big bags if your destination is central. They stop at one fixed point and are as exposed to rush-hour traffic as any car.
Taxi or pre-booked transfer — door to door
A car covers the 40 km in 35–45 minutes to any address, with no changes and no timetable. Pre-booking matters more here than in most cities: Swedish taxi fares are not centrally regulated, so the price is whatever the operator publishes, and agreeing it in writing beforehand removes the one genuine risk at an airport rank.
This is the option that wins with children, several suitcases, an address away from Centralen, a very early departure or a very late arrival — and the option that is hardest to justify for one traveller with a cabin bag.
Metro and local buses — not from the airport
Stockholm's metro does not reach Arlanda. The nearest connections involve a bus to Märsta and a commuter train onward, which is cheap and genuinely slow. It is worth knowing about only if you are heading to Märsta or Sigtuna rather than the city.
Hire car — only if you are leaving the city
Central Stockholm has congestion charging on weekdays, expensive parking and a good deal of pedestrianised street. Hiring at the airport makes sense if you are continuing to the archipelago, Dalarna or the countryside, and rarely if you are staying downtown.
How to decide in one line
Travelling light to somewhere near Centralen: take the Arlanda Express. Watching the budget and not in a hurry: commuter train or coach. Group, luggage, children, a night arrival or an address anywhere else in the region: pre-book a car and agree the price first.
Questions about this journey
What is the cheapest way from Arlanda to central Stockholm?
The commuter train or an airport coach. Both cost a fraction of the Arlanda Express, at the price of a longer journey and a walk or metro ride at the far end.
What is the easiest way with a family and luggage?
A pre-booked car. One vehicle, child seats fitted in advance, no platform changes, and a price agreed before you land.
Is there public transport from Arlanda at night?
Some coach and commuter services run late, but frequency drops sharply after midnight and gaps can be long. If you land in the small hours, a booked car is usually the only option that does not involve waiting.
Does the Stockholm metro go to Arlanda?
No. The metro does not serve the airport. Rail access is the Arlanda Express and the commuter train, both from stations under the terminals.
