Airport transfers

Taxi from Arlanda Airport to central Stockholm

A private transfer from Arlanda Airport to central Stockholm is a car booked for you alone, meeting you in the arrivals hall and taking you to one address. Arlanda is about 40 km north of the city, normally 35–45 minutes of driving, longer in weekday rush traffic.

Who this is for, and how the request works

It suits travellers who would rather not change trains: families, groups of two or more with checked bags, business travellers going straight to a meeting, and anyone staying away from the streets around Stockholm Central Station.

You send a request with your flight number, the number of passengers and large cases, and the address in Stockholm. We reply with the price and the meeting arrangement in writing. Nothing is booked until you have that confirmation and accept it — there is no instant booking on this site.

Requests can be sent weeks ahead or the day before. Child seats, extra luggage and larger vehicles need the most notice, because the right car has to be assigned before it leaves for the airport.

Is a taxi the right choice?

A car is the better answer when the walk at each end is the hard part of the journey. Two or more passengers with checked luggage, children in car seats, a hotel in Östermalm, Södermalm or on a Gamla Stan side street, a cruise berth at Stadsgården or Frihamnen, a late-evening landing, or reduced mobility — in each of those the door-to-door leg is what you are paying for.

The Arlanda Express is the better answer for one or two people with light luggage staying within a few minutes of Centralen: it takes about 20 minutes and is unaffected by traffic. The airport coaches are slower but cheaper, and the commuter train with a change is the cheapest option of all. If your journey looks like that, take the train — we would rather write it here than have you discover it afterwards.

Groups are where the arithmetic shifts. Four travellers each paying a train fare, then a taxi from Centralen to the hotel, are usually close to the price of one car that took them the whole way. Our comparison guide sets both options out side by side without picking a winner for you.

What happens after you land

Non-Schengen arrivals clear passport control before baggage reclaim, which on a busy morning in Terminal 5 can add 20–40 minutes to the time between landing and walking out. That is why pickups are timed from the actual landing, read from your flight number, rather than from the scheduled arrival.

The driver waits inside the arrivals hall after the baggage belts, holding a name sign, so you walk from the belt to a person rather than out to a car park. The exact meeting point for your terminal is written into your confirmation.

If your flight is delayed, the meeting time moves with it and nobody needs to be told. If you clear faster than expected, message the driver on the number in your confirmation. On a busy arrival the car may need a few minutes to reach the pickup lane; we say that rather than promising it is always waiting.

The journey into Stockholm

The route is the E4 motorway south, through forest and farmland for most of the way, with the first sight of the city as the road drops towards Norrtull. It is a quiet drive with nothing to change or carry, which is most of the point of it.

Where you are staying decides the last ten minutes more than the first thirty. Norrmalm and Vasastan are reached directly from the motorway. Östermalm and Södermalm add city traffic. Gamla Stan is the exception: several lanes are pedestrian-only or too narrow for a car, so the drop-off is agreed in advance at the nearest street where a vehicle can legally stop, with the walking distance stated before you travel.

Onward addresses outside the centre — Solna, Kista, Nacka, Uppsala or a cruise quay — are part of the same journey and priced as one, not added as an extra leg.

Local knowledge

Two things we only know from driving the route and working the terminals.

Travelling with children

Swedish law requires children shorter than 135 cm to use an appropriate child restraint. Give each child's age and height in your request and the seats are fitted before the car leaves for the airport — babies, toddlers and booster-age children each need something different.

Pushchairs travel folded in the boot, which is worth counting alongside your cases when you tell us the luggage. A family of four with four large cases and a pram is usually a larger vehicle rather than a saloon, and that has to be decided when the car is assigned, not at the kerb.

Larger families and groups arriving on separate flights can be combined into one pickup window, or split across two cars from the same meeting point, whichever you prefer.

Accessibility and larger vehicles

Tell us what you need and we confirm in writing whether it is available for your date and time. A folding wheelchair travels in the boot of a standard car. A powered chair, a non-folding chair or a ramp-equipped vehicle depends on which vehicles are free that day, so it is confirmed case by case rather than promised in advance.

For reduced mobility without a wheelchair, we can agree a pickup point closer to the terminal door and allow more time between landing and departure. Arlanda's own assistance service is arranged through your airline, not through us, and should be requested when you book the flight.

Good to know before you land

Sweden runs almost entirely on cards. Taxis, cafés and shops take card and mobile payment, and some no longer accept cash at all, so there is no need to find an exchange desk at the airport.

Weather changes the journey more than the distance does. Between December and March the road is cleared and salted, but heavy snow slows everything, and the drive can take noticeably longer than the same trip in June. Winter tyres are a legal requirement in those conditions and are fitted on the cars.

Tipping is not expected. A rounded-up fare is normal, nothing more, and the agreed transfer price already includes everything for the journey you asked for.

Questions about this journey

Should I request my transfer before I land?

Yes. The price and meeting point are confirmed in writing beforehand, and child seats or a larger vehicle have to be assigned before the car leaves for the airport. Requests on the day are possible but limit what we can offer.

What happens if my flight is delayed?

Pickups are tracked against the flight number, so the meeting time moves with the flight. You do not need to contact us. Waiting time inside the agreed window is part of the price; anything beyond it is discussed with you before it is charged.

Can I travel with skis, golf clubs or a bicycle?

Usually yes, but say so in the request. Oversized items decide which vehicle is sent, and a saloon booked for two passengers will not take two ski bags.

Can we stop on the way into the city?

A short stop can be agreed in advance — a second address, or a shop on the route. Mention it in your request so it is priced and planned rather than negotiated in the car.

Can I request a child seat?

Yes, at no extra charge. Give each child's age and height so the right restraint is fitted. Children under 135 cm need one by Swedish law.

Is a transfer worth it if I am travelling alone?

Often not. One passenger with light luggage staying near Central Station is better served by the Arlanda Express. A car earns its place with luggage, children, an address away from Centralen, or a late arrival.
